Which I have made twice before. Most recently in a gorgeous teal, see review here and blog post here then I made it back in March 2008, see review here and blog post here.
My latest version is for me. Lynne and I talk about Cabi Canary quite a bit and she was so excited about the entire Ponte collection. I liked many of the items and had purchased 3 yards of gray ponte from Fabricmart a couple of weeks ago. My intention was for a cardigan and a simple skirt, well plans change. Lynne is going to make the trench coat and said she was looking at this McCall's pattern for her version. Her enthusiasm was contagious and I fell on the Ponte Trench Coat bandwagon.

So the information. I made a size 10, a size smaller than my normal jacket size. I ended up taking the jacket in more on the side seams, shoulder seams, underarms and top of sleeves. I kept trying on this jacket and heading to the mirror to see what I needed to do for fitting. I wanted this jacket on the slimmer side, as it looked in the Cabi picture
My advice would be if using a Ponte knit, go down a size. I did not line this jacket due to the many size adjustments I made after some of the construction was complete. I felt I could not even come close to getting the lining to be the correct size, so I used some black knit and finished the facings
Here is the ponte on my dressform
Here on me
I will style it quite differently - just came home and put on the Ponte trench for pictures.
I do think this is a piece I will wear quite a bit and will be a nice addition to my closet.
Thanks Lynne, can't wait to see yours.
Lori - it's fabulous! What a wonderful make. It will be a great addition to your closet for many years. g
ReplyDeleteVery nice I love the idea of a Ponte knit coat. I'm sure you will get your moneys worth out of this one.
ReplyDeleteI'm taking a class on sewing trench coats right now and many of the students are using the McCall's pattern. The ponte version is a real win!
ReplyDeleteYour ponte-trench is a real winner. Flattering, trendy, and comfortable! Great idea.
ReplyDeletethat`s a good idea - looks comfortable and I presume this will be much easier to iron and care for. perfect !
ReplyDeleteLove your trench! A very inspiring piece - I love the wearability of Ponte.
ReplyDeleteGreat looking trench - and I bet it's very comfortable to wear. What a wonderful idea to use a Ponte. It looks very chic and elegant, especially in that lovely shade of grey.
ReplyDeleteLOVE IT!!!! I'm so jumping on your band wagon!!! Thanks for the inspiration. :-)
ReplyDeleteLooks great- Love it!
ReplyDeleteLove it Lori. Great colour and style. I jumped on the ponte bandwagon last year and I have those same Cabi photos saved to my computer as inspiration. Thanks for all the sizing advice too. So far most of my ponte/DK jackets are store bought but I have lots in flat fabric form too. ;)
ReplyDeleteVery stylish and so versatile. I love it!

Lori, it's awesome! I'm so curious to know about the weight of your ponte...and I'm also very excited to make one of my own!
ReplyDeleteNicely done!
Cute jacket! I picked up some ponte this weekend, gray and navy, to make a color-blocked dress. Love the trench idea.
ReplyDeleteI haven't thought of using Ponte for a Trench, but wow--that turned out to be fantastic. Gray is the new best neutral of the year. Good choice, Lori.
ReplyDeleteLooooove your trench and have noticed that ponte knit is the trend this year.
ReplyDeleteWhat an interesting twist on a trench coat style jacket; using a ponte. It totally works. I love that you have made it in a neutral gray color. It will be so versatile. Nice job!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful trench! You're right - you'll definitely get lots of wear out of this.
ReplyDeleteI'd never think of using a ponte knit for this, but it is so beautiful. You used regular ponte - right, not ponte roma?
ReplyDeleteIt looks great on you. I'm sure you'll love the soft comfy ponte.

You did a great job on the jacket. I bet you will wear it a lot. I really liked CAbi's ponte knit line, but they didn't fit me all that great. You saved a lot of money by doing it yourself! I was thinking of buying some ponte knit and making similar work pants for what they had in their Fall line.
ReplyDeleteWhat an awesome idea! Your jacket looks great. I'm supposed to go to a Cabi party on Wednesday.
ReplyDeleteI would never have thought to make a trench pattern up in a ponte knit, but the result is simply brilliant!
ReplyDeleteI love making coats and skirts from ponte knits. It move well and is a dream to sew. Love the coat your made.
ReplyDeleteLove your version of this Trench! I am in the middle of making the long view of this pattern. Hung up on getting the right buttons at the moment.

What a great idea and a wonderful result! Love that you made it in the new hot color for the season!!!
ReplyDeleteLove it! Wondering if the ponte you used is 100% poly or if it is a blend with lycra, or a blend with cotton, poly and lycra. It is so hard to buy fabric without being able to touch it.
