Silk Shirt using Three Patterns

A luscious piece of  Mood Fabrics' Silk Crepe de Chine

has been sitting on my cutting table just waiting to be made into a new top for me.  I really struggled to find a pattern I wanted to make.  I wanted it loose but not too loose, that doesn't look good on me.  I spent several days...
looking and
                                             looking
                                                                            and looking
through my pattern stash.

Finally, I decided on Megan Nielsen's Briar tshirt and sweater for the body of the shirt.  I cut it a bit bigger in the body since this is a woven.  Another change was the back, I used Deer and Doe's Datura Blouse for my inspiration (this pattern is on the way to me).

The back is cut with a back yoke, then two pieces for the lower back.  I added 2" to the center back for a button placket.  My plan was to use this lower back for buttons and buttonholes to put on the top.  This making my top not too loose.  Well, I did not need to use the buttons and did not need to take in the side seams for the fit.  No buttonholes is good for me, I stitched the placket closed and sewed the buttons.  There is some piping between the yoke and lower back section.  Oh, yes, one more thing, the back is cut just a bit lower for a high-low hem.

Now for the sleeves, I didn't feel the sleeves from the Briar shirt would work, so I used the sleeves from Grainline's Scout Woven Tee.  Why didn't I use this pattern first?  Honestly, it wasn't in my pattern stash, I bought it after I decided I needed different sleeves.  I love those pdf, downloadable patterns.

Oh, yes, neckline is finished with self-fabric bias binding.

I am thrilled with my new top, cool and comfortable for summer but chic and stylish.

Oh, yes one more thing after one month without a serger, this came in my inbox today

Dear Lori,

Your Baby Lock Imagine is ready for pickup

One guess where I will be at 10 am in the morning? It is my lucky day, the serger is repaired and I have Thursday off this week instead of Friday.   I feel like I have withdrawal from very little garment sewing.  I just really like how the inside looks with the serger finish, not too mention sewing a knit garment without my serger.  First thing up, a  maxi dress.

  7. You do know I'm always watching what you make, especially your tops. That was quite a marriage you performed on this top. I love what you did to the back of the Briar pattern. I have that pattern and was wondering how it would turn out if I used a woven instead of knit. I've been operating under the rule: that it's ok to use a pattern designed for wovens to make a knit if I go down a size, but not the other way around. Not sure where that rule came from though. Can you tell me why you choose not to use the Briar sleeve?
