I thought I tutorial would be in order for the reverse applique I used on my bag. You get a pretty picture for the tutorial button and a more basic design for the tutorial steps.
The fabric I selected was marine vinyl from Joann's. You could use pleather, leather, suede, vinyl or any type of fabric that does not ravel. In this tutorial I will refer to the main fabric as vinyl.
Step one:
Find the middle of your project. I use a chalk marker on my vinyl, it wipes right off. I also marked the top for the bag closure.
Step two:
Here you can see all my markings, the top (on right), the bottom (on left) and the center. I added two more marks 1/2" on each side of center to equally space my letters. I printed out my letters from Word and cut them out. With this pattern, I can trace with the chalk marker. If you make mistake or don't like the spacing, take a wet cloth and erase what you traced
Step Three:
I cut out the letters with nice smooth cuts following the chalk lines
Step Four:
On the wrong side, place the fabric pieces over the pattern. I used tape to keep these in place. Just pull on the to keep the fabric tight.
Step Five:
I then stitched the vinyl to the cotton fabric. I used a teflon type foot and used one of the markings to keep a straight line. Remember to just go slowly and if needed reach under the vinyl and pull your cotton fabric tighter if needed.
Step Six:
The stitching all complete, admire your work.
Step Seven:
Wipe off the chalk marks and admire your work.
I hope this helps. The reverse applique was for Kailtyn's laptop sleeve, she heads out Wednesday.
Thank you very much! Very interesting master class.
