Here is the one that went to Baby A at the end of January. I found the pattern doing a search on Pinterest but guess who didn't pin the pattern. Yep, me and now I cannot find the exact pattern.
How I created this quilt was to cut a the 5" squares in half, which are also known as a charm pack. I then chain stitched them to a 2-1/2" WOF white solid. After completing all the chain stitching, I used my rotary cutter to make the white strips 2-1/2" wide. All that is left is stitching the 2-1/2" strips together in rows, alternating the white square to opposite sides. These rows have another 2-1/2" strip between them and a colorful border added to complete the quilt.
One thing I do like to do when making a baby quilt is to make sure it does not get wider than 41 inches. Keeping this under this measurement mark keeps me from piecing the back of the quilt. I can just buy straight yardage in a fun print for the back. Usually I can purchase less than 1-1/2 yards for the back. Thanks to Meredith, my local quilt shop owner for this handy tip.
The next quilt is in my gift closet waiting for the arrival of another little baby boy. I do have a pattern for you and it is called Storytime Squares Quilt which I did make one change. Her pattern calls for 5-1/2" squares, I used another charm pack (5" squares). I did have to adjust the length of the white borders.
My draping on the chair, doesn't give a clear picture of this quilt but you get the idea.
And a close-up of the quilting on this one.
They are both so nice!
ReplyDeleteThanks, they were fun to make.
DeleteThey are both precious Lori - such a thoughtful gift!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Melissa, I love doing them and giving them.
DeleteThese are lovely! I do hear you about boy quilts. Finding fabrics that don't have pink, flowers, and other girly motifs is quite difficult!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Nancy, the flowers and girly fabric pulls me right in. I really have to be focused to buy the boy fabric.
DeleteBoth quilts are very pretty - love how the white makes the colors pop. Do you do your own machine quilting ? I haven't mastered that & usually just stitch in ditch, but yours looks stunning
ReplyDeleteThanks, Mary Ellen, I do not do my machine quilting, I send it to a long arm quilter. It is not too much for a small baby quilt.
DeleteThese quilts are adorable! I love both patterns. Do you remember the name of the Charm Pack(s) you used? I love the colors!! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Mary Sarah, the name of the charm pack it is called Mixed bag by Moda.
DeleteLove the colors in your quilts! You got those done so quickly!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Catherine, I usually work on the baby quilts one night a month at our local quilt shop's sewing night.
DeleteSuper cute quilt! I found your blog by seeing a comment you made on Sonya's little girl dresses post on Instagram. I started out making clothes, then made a few quilts, then got busy traveling with my job, am now back to making clothes but LOVE LOVE LOVE quilts & might throw those into the mix again too. I need to get faster at making stuff though!
ReplyDeleteIt is fun to mix up the clothing and the quilting. The new fun prints and colors in the quilting cottons pull me right in. And the times when I am feeling "fluffy" (LOL) I can make a quilt and not worry about fit.
DeleteBoth quilts are darling.
ReplyDeleteThe first quilt looks like the Zipper Quilt from Missouri Star Quilt Company - there's a tutorial on YouTube with instructions.
Thanks so much for the name, I appreciate it!
DeleteI am making one with polka dot fabrics. Are the strips 2 1/2 inch or 3 inch?
ReplyDeleteThey would be 2-1/2
DeleteLove these 2 baby quilts. I've made the first one several times. Found the pattern in a quilt magazine many years ago. It used 4" x 7" rectangles and one 4" x 4" square. It goes together very quickly and you can make it as scrappy as you want. I general cut my leftovers from other projects into 4x7 rectangle and keep until I get enough to make a quilt.
ReplyDeleteI plan to make your 2nd quilt using leftover charms. Thanks again.
