New Look 6282

I have mentioned before on this blog about my youngest two (the twins) height.  Well, Meredith wanted another maxi dress and of course it is hard to find in RTW for a 5'9" girl.  So, it was Mom, will you make me another maxi dress?  Of course and off to Joann's we went for fabric.  Meredith and I have some similar characteristics but one thing we are very different is on how quickly we make a decision.  I am rapid fire, get it done.  Meredith is ponder, think, ponder more, change her mind, ponder and think some more.   Take this slower decision making to the fabric store and it is pull out bolts of fabric, then put them back, trying very hard to make a decision but uncertainty comes into the picture.  You see Meredith doesn't want to make a mistake with the fabric and thus the ultimate garment.  I have learned to let her work at her own pace and arrive at the perfect decision.  It rarely fails her and I need to learn from her.  Take this maxi dress (New Look 6282) as Exihibit A!

Isn't it a gorgeous dress?  Meredith knew she wanted the floral texture fabric for the bodice.  It is some type of knit.

I made the straps from a woven in my stash and used the same fabric to line the bodice.  I added one inch to the bodice and two inches to the length.  Yes, that is 3 inches all together and look, just enough for a small hem and she is wearing flat sandals.  Remember she is 5' 9", so adjust this pattern as needed for your height.

The pattern goes together beautifully and results in a gorgeous dress.  I like the elastic in the top of the back bodice and at the waist, another aid in a good fit.

The skirt is a dotted silky fabric  that is quite sheer.  The underskirt has an additional inch in the length and it is a silky jacquard type fabric.

I love how this dress turned out and Meredith was so happy with the result.
It fits her beautifully and looks great with her complexion.  I love when a dress turns out great and your daughter is so happy with the finished garment.  Meredith wanted view C with the front and back slits. Erin talked her out of this view, stating with any type of breeze or when you walk that front panel would just slip right between your legs.  Meredith thought this was a valid point and went with view A.  I was thrilled with this, no narrow hemming at all those slits.

Meredith wore the dress today to Kaitlyn's bridal shower and here is Meredith (maid of honor) with Kaitlyn.  Meredith is taller but for a change Kaitlyn is wearing heels and Meredith is not.

  3. Such a pretty dress. How did you handle the silky material without getting puckers on the seams ? Your girls are such beautiful young ladies .

    1. Thanks, Mary Ellen, I pulled a bit on the front and back of the fabric while sewing it and that helped with the puckers.

  5. Very pretty! I've had this pattern out on my sewing table for a while. Great to see it all made up. I was drawn to view C with the slits as well, but it was good to read the thoughts that Erin shared. Thinking, thinking, thinking….I'm a ponderer too, LOL.

    1. I love having others' opinions, helps with things you don't think of. I would tighten up the elastic in the back of the dress after seeing Meredith wear it for a bit of time. Have fun making your new dress.
