The fabric is doing all the work in the dress, the incredibly beautiful Mood Fabrics' Silk Twill, which I have been loving to look at since December. Unfortunately, this particular silk twill is sold out but no worries, Mood Fabrics has a great selection of Silk Twills
I knew I wanted a simple dress for this fabric and while on vacation I did some pattern shopping. I picked up Simplicity 8178 which looked just like what I had pictured in my head. This pattern had nice features, pockets (always good), elastic waist for a better fit, crossover front and slim cut.
I seem to do the same adjustment on a crossover style dress, I sew a bit deeper seam allowance on ends. I am a picture person, so here is a photo to help with my explanation.
This pulls the bodice into my body a bit more and gives a better fit. Although, I have to confess, a good breeze was blowing(as my hair shows) and I had to adjust that crossover quite a bit. I am going to sew a small snap on that crossover to have good coverage! The skirt to this pattern is slim and straight. I hemmed it shorter to have good range of motion while walking.
Finishes on this pattern include, bias binding and serged seams. The silk twill does want to ravel quite a bit. This fabric has such a beautiful hand and drape, it was perfect for my dress and I am so happy I saved it for just the right pattern.
I love my new dress, it was made of a fabulous fabric and a pattern that didn't take too much time to sew. This is a nice factor in the summer, I want to spend so much time outdoors, well maybe not this week, way too hot! One thing about hout weather and good rains (which we have had). It is good for the crops, this picture is on a low part that hasn't done the best but most of the corn is way over my head, even with these four inch heels.
Disclosure - I receive a monthly fabric allowance from Mood Fabrics to make a garment. These garment are blogged at Mood Sewing Network first and then I will blog here about this garment.
