I love the stretch velvet look this season and wanted a cardigan after I saw an Eileen Fischer cardigan in an Instagram advertisement
On Instagram, I asked if I should make View A (short) or View B (long). It was overwhelming for View B. Thanks for the votes and I honestly cut View B but it just wasn't working for me. I really like a hip length cardigan.
This pattern doesn't take any time to make, just be careful with your nap on stretch velvet. I did most the sewing on my serger and it was a quick sew.
I love the back of this cardigan, the peplum is gorgeous and with the soft drape of the velvet it is perfect. Speaking of the velvet, I used Style Maker Fabrics' Spruce Stretch Velvet, head quickly to get it, only 1-2/3 yards left. There are several other stretch velvet choices at Style Maker Fabrics, pick your favorite color and sew away. I am thinking about the Raspberry color, I really like that shade and trying to decide what to make next from stretch velvet.
One thing I did change was to add a facing to the front of the jacket. The pattern just has you turn the front edge under and hem. I knew my cardigan would open up and show the wrong side. So I wanted a nice facing, plus this would allow me to roll the collar over. See the photo below.
I worked really hard to get some good photos, the fabric and pattern deserved exceptional photos. On Christmas Eve we had a beautiful snow, just enough to make the roads slick. This made it hard for my girls and their families to get here to celebrate Christmas. We always celebrate on Christmas Eve, then they can be home on Christmas Day. The snow was a great idea but really makes the garment hard to see. This photo, does show the facing.
Here is full snow shot!
Now on the porch the light was good to get a nice back view and the drape of the peplum. I would recommend hand basting all hems. The velvet really wants to shift and the hand basting holds it in place.
I wasn't thrilled with these photos, so on the 26th, I tried again. Now the temperature was about 5 degrees with the windchill. I survived about 6 photos outside and decide inside would be just fine! LOL
I just couldn't get out of the wind, but the light is always better outdoors, right?
Any ideas of what I should make in the Raspberry Velvet?
I love this. I didn't see your question on Instagram, since I have been so busy, but I would have chosen the length you did. I think it is very flattering. I do love this color, but you are right that raspberry would be pretty too.
ReplyDeleteThe back of this cardigan is just gorgeous! Love the drape of the peplum in that velvet and the colour! It's divine ;)
ReplyDeleteOoooo....raspberry velvet....sounds like a decadent dessert. I have a pale, pale pink and I'm making a bodysuit. Not sure how I'll feel about the tight fit once I'm done, but it will be cozy and warm.
ReplyDeleteYour sweater is so lovely!!! I too love the back detail.
It is really gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful combination of fabric and pattern. Lovely.
ReplyDeleteThis is beautiful! Looks great on you.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! This pattern is a winner, and pairing it with the stretch velvet is perfect. Merry Christmas!
ReplyDeleteIt is so flattering and beautiful. I think I will make one. Yes to the raspberry. Extra kudos for braving this frigid weather! Love your posts.
ReplyDeleteRaspberry velvet- I love the look of a slouchy t shirt in velvet. Pick your favorite long sleeve pattern and go for it. The contrast of fancy velvet and casual t shirt is hot!
