Every spring and summer I need new tops, I seem to be hard on my clothes in the summer months and every year when the weather warms up it is time for me to add some new pieces.
I am trying to add solids to my wardrobe, it is not something it tend to buy or sew but this Mood Fabrics’ Italian Blue Topweight Viscose Denim is amazing and perfect for tops. The description Comprised solely of viscose, this denim twill has the ability to drape fluidly while adding a crisp quality to any edgy tailored shirt. Completely opaque and providing a subtle sheen, used this fashionable fabric for boyfriend styled shirts, summer shorts and denim dresses. Note that this material weights 250 grams per meter.
went with Simplicity 8840 for the pattern, I loved the tucks, the collar and the sleeves for View D. I recommend using a smaller needle, maybe a 70. I noticed when I first started sewing this denim the needle marks were noticeable. Other than that the fabric washed and dried beautifully.
This top is a bit short, I did add one inch to the length, but I might add a bit more next time. Other than that it was a relatively quick garment to sew. Just carefully mark the pleats and all will be good. I can’t wait to make another one. There are several other fabric suggested – chambray, cotton types, dotted swiss, lightweight denim (yep it is beautiful!),linen, poplin, shirtings, silky types. I am thinking linen for the next one I make.
The back of the shirt has a long invisible zipper, I did make the zipper shorter so be careful, longer is better!
had some of this viscose denim left and in the same order, this Mood Exclusive Krishna’s Cotton Voile and the denim went perfectly with it. The description – With a soft, airy hand and sporting a billowy drape, it is ideal for use in button downs, sundresses, or midi skirts! Its slightly translucent construction deems a lining to only be necessary if additional structure or modesty are desired. This fabric is so soft and nice and I love it for New Look 6490 and I went with view B.
he top does call for a lining but I just used part of the voile for a facing and used that from the front opening.
The viscose denim has perfect drape for the butterfly sleeves
Here is the back of the top and I am pleased with this combination. Voile is always so nice to sew and I love the colors in this stripe.
Disclosure - I receive a monthly fabric allowance from Mood Fabrics to make a garment. This garment is blogged at Mood Sewing Network first and then I will blog here about this garment.
Both tops look great and will be hardworking additions to your wardrobe!! The blue with the mustard pants has a nice casual 'chic' look. :)
