Lander Shorts and Topstitching Tips

Yes, what seems to my favorite pants/short pattern is making another appearance on the blog.  I have the fit down and I love the style of these, so why not make them again.

If you follow Sewover50 on Instagram you might have seen my post about topstitching.  These shorts were the ones I was sewing for the samples.  The fabric is a cotton twill from Style Makers Fabrics, which I like for summer option.  A bit lighter weight than a denim, so good for our hot August.  My color is peacock, which is sold out but there are three other great colors.

I wanted to get these finished so I could show off the topstitching after the Instagram post and share  my tips for topstiching on the blog.

1.  I love presser feet, check out your sewing machine brand for options. .  Here are some of my go-to feet from L to R, edgestitching foot, 1/4" foot (good for a second row of topstitching), open toe foot(for exact placement) and general sewing foot (some great lines on the foot to use as a guide)

2.My favorite is the edgestitching foot.  Place the flange next to the edge of the pocket/seam and use the flange as a guide.

3.  Here is the edgestitching foot  in action, I do move the needle over to the left, if I didn't the stitching would be right behind the flange.  This means no topstitching but stitch-in-the-ditch.   Check your sewing maching manual on how to move your needle left or right.

4.  I like to use the triple stitch, goes forward, then back and then forward again.  Once that is completed it moves onto the next stitch.  I love this stitch for the look with regular construction thread.  I have a nice assortment of this type of thread so always have topstiching possibilities.

5.  Practice stitching and sample the thread colors for which looks the best.

6.  Don't look at the needle, look ahead of the to keep your topstitching straight. Also, go slow!  That is really the most important thing, slow and steady does pay off.  If you machine has the needle down feature, this is a good time to use it.

Hope these help, I find topstitching so relaxing and fun.  After you are finished, it really is something that stands out and changes the look of a garment.

I used the zipper fly front expansion pack for these, no jean buttons!  Also, I might have slimmed these a bit too much below the waistband down about 2-3 inches, I do believe the twill will relax and all will be fine.
